Sleep and Back Pain

Finding Your Perfect Sleep Position

Many people struggle with sleep positions. While most orthopaedic physicians will ultimately defer to comfort and personal choice, the way you lie can be a significant factor in the quality of your sleep. An uncomfortable position can worsen pre-existing pain, insomnia or other health problems associated with sleepless nights. For the best sleep – and to ease back pain – use pillows and supports to fill open spaces and to ease the tension on your muscle tissue.

Sleeping Well on Your Side

Most people sleep on their side, and it’s a strong choice, with two important caveats. Sleeping with your bottom arm under your pillow or your top leg stretched out can lead straight to shoulder and neck pain. Side sleep can also put pressure on your stomach and lungs, but for the most part it’s a safe and popular choice.

I Only Wanted to Develop a Pillow to Cushion my Knees

Posted by Eileen Pelletier on August 06, 2018. 0 Comments

I have always slept on my side. However, knee pain kept interrupting my sleep. I tried a pillow as well as several knee pillows on the market. They were either uncomfortable, or got lost during the night. So, I developed my own. What a shock to discover that it also cured my back pain! I had thought that at 63 years old, the back pain was normal for someone of my age, who was picking up their grandchildren, running and playing with them.

To my surprise, all the literature explained how important it is for side sleepers to use a pillow between their knees to align their hips, and prevent back pain. I didn't know that!

I no longer have back pain, and I sleep so well, that my grandkids no longer have to worry about "taking it easy on Grandma", when we play chase or hide and seek. What...

People have sleep problems for a variety of reasons, not least of which is the recurring problem of pain and discomfort while reclining.

Back pain is a significant cause of poor sleep, especially among those with chronic problems that include arthritis, fibromyalgia, muscle spasticity, nocturnal leg cramps, and joint degeneration.

When your sleeping quarters are a pain

Part of the challenge may also come from a less-than-ideal bedroom situation.

The Two Most Important Things for a Knee Pillow

Posted by Eileen Pelletier on August 06, 2018. 0 Comments

Being a side sleeper, I have tried many different types of knee pillows to correct my sleep posture. I have discovered that the most important attribute for a knee pillow, besides aligning your hips, is that it be very comfortable, It is hard enough to fall asleep with out feeling a block of foam, like a knee separator, between your knees. That's enough to give you a sleepless night! A knee pillow should be so comfy that you barely notice it's there, if at all.

The second most important feature, is that it stay in place all night. People move while asleep. They change sides, and sometimes even sleep, for a time, on their backs. A knee pillow is useless if it doesn't stay between your knees.

The Sleepy Kneez Secret

Posted by Eileen Pelletier on August 06, 2018. 0 Comments

When I was developing a knee pillow to cushion my knees, and prevent knee pain from disturbing my sleep, I realized the 2 problems with all the pillows I had already tried. They were all uncomfortable and most didn't stay in place all night. The first problem could be solved by shaping my pillow so that it was small enough not to disturb my sleep, but large enough to totally cushion my knees. While I was testing out the different shapes, I realized that my back pain, from which I had suffered for years, was disappearing.

Therefore, my mission became how small a pillow could I make, so that it felt like nothing was there (Since I am not the best sleeper, it was imperative that I not feel the pillow during the night.), yet it could still cushion my knees, and align my hips, to prevent...
