My Sleep Story: Part 1

Posted by Eileen Pelletier on July 18, 2017. 0 Comments

For many years, I had trouble staying asleep. Since I sleep on my side, I stacked my legs, and the bones of my knees would dig into each other, causing pain. I had to come up with a solution. First, I started buying long night gowns, pushing the extra fabric between my knees, to cushion them. Didn't work: The cushioning wasn't thick enough, and moved away from my knees when I turned over.

I then decided to try a regular pillow. Two problems: It would get caught in my blankets when I tried to turn over, so it woke me up, and I lost it several times during the night. A smaller pillow didn't wake me when I turned over, but got lost even more easily.

I tried many of the knee pillows and leg separators, but I didn't find them particularly comfortable (I am a light sleeper), and many still got lost during the night.

Enough was enough. I decided to come up with my own solution. I worked for 2 years trying to come up with the perfect shape: Big enough to align my hips & cushion my knees, but small enough to be comfortable. Next, I had to work on how to keep it in place all night.

I tried different ways to attach the pillow to the leg: pleated bands, elastic velcro, and incorporating the band into the washable case, in a comfortable cotton jersey. I slept with them all, deciding that the last option was the best.
