Mental illness can affect anyone, no matter what age, gender, or race. While some mental illnesses are caused by biological and genetic factors, there are ways to lessen the risks of it by looking after your mental health. Apart from having a good work-life balance and getting counselling, one way to boost your mental health is to get enough sleep. Not only can sleep refresh you and give you energy for the next day, but it can also benefit you in many ways. Here are the mental health benefits of sleep.

It can fight depression and anxiety

Getting too little rest may heighten negative feelings, which often leads to anxiety and depression. If you’ve ever felt cranky or down after getting only a few hours of sleep, then keep in mind that getting at least 8 hours of sleep every night can help to improve your mood. A study shows that sleep loss has a stronger effect on mood than motor function. To feel happier, try having a good bedtime routine and go to bed at a reasonable hour.

It can clear your mind

Meditation can help to ground you and get you in touch with your inner self, but having 8 hours of sleep can also help to quiet the mind. Your brain clears itself of negative thoughts and heals itself when you sleep. This is the reason why after you feel so much better physically and emotionally after getting enough sleep. To have a better sleep quality, try having a hot bath or using aromatherapy essential oils for stress relief and a good night’s sleep. You can also try using a special pillow to help relieve pressure in the hips and lower back while you sleep.

It helps you focus and improves memory

Children are often told to get some sleep to be able to focus on their schoolwork. But adults can also improve their memory and focus by getting enough rest. According to a study, sleep protects new memories from getting disrupted and it can also help to consolidate memories according to their relative importance. If you have a big presentation to make at work the next day, try sleeping right after you’ve reviewed and practiced your presentation to have a better chance of consolidating information.

Sleep is important for your health and well-being. Try getting at least 8 hours of sleep every night to improve your health and have a better quality of life.
